Walking Your Way to Better Health

Several studies suggest that all of us in Spokane should be walking about 10,000 steps each day. That’s about five miles.

How many steps do you take each day?

The great thing about walking is that it doesn’t require any fancy equipment or an expensive health club membership. Even better, for those of us who need instant gratification, even moderate walking for just 30 minutes a day can produce noticeable results in just a matter of a week or two.

Thankfully, by living in Spokane we have access to a variety of local hiking trails. And they’re excellent for beginners because they are relatively flat as they follow the river and many are paved, making for safer walking. One of our favorites is the Spokane Centennial Trail.

Don’t discount the health benefits of something as simple as walking. Even walking 20-minutes a day has been shown to improve a variety of common health problems:

Improved cardiovascular health – Walking has been shown to reduce hypertension and lower cholesterol. No drugs. No side effects. And no special equipment needed.

Improved quality of sleep – Regular walking has been shown to enhance your ability to get to sleep and stay asleep. An all-natural way to improve the depth and value of your sleep.

Improved emotional well-being – Research has shown that something as simple as regular walking can virtually eliminate the need for antidepressants and other mood altering drugs.

Improved muscle strength – Walking, which uses virtually every muscle we have, can increase our core muscle strength, improve our endurance and balance while reducing falls.

Improved weight management – Many have found that something as simple as walking, combined with a change in their diet, can have profound affects in shedding unwanted weight.

The purpose of our practice is to help promote healthier lifestyle choices. Walking, along with regular chiropractic care can protect and advance your overall health and well-being. Give us a call to schedule a chiropractic check up for you and your family.
